At Street Level
Rest in peace Jesse
At
Street Level. This was a sign right on the corner next to Shell Gas Station on
Columbus Drive. Wendy's will be opening soon after Branko (Serbian Cat) sold
the property to the city. Jesse was the homeless Mexican guy who used to squat
right where the empty building used to house Shell Gas station that Branko's
father Mike owned back in the day. When Jesse died Street called up that number
on the sign & talked to Branko. “Hey man could you put a lil something on
that sign of yours on Columbus Dr?" Street put it to him. “Like what?”
Bronko asked me. "Like rest in peace Jesse” Street comes back @ him.
“Jesse died?” He wanted to know. Street talked with him for a minute &
thanked Bronko. The very next day he had his guy come out & put up the rest
in peace Jesse on the sign. Thank you very much Branko for your consideration sir.
With Wendy's opening soon, what is the future of the sign? Remember Edna Diaz
coming to The Main Library on Columbus Dr. looking for Jesse. She had some
Puerto Rican food her mother had cooked for Jesse. (Edna's mom has since died R.I.P.)
But yeah everybody who came to The Harbor knew Jesse. Some people might
remember when Jesse first started out over there by The Harbor Lounge, Busy Corner,
and Township parking lot on Broadway. Then Jesse posted up right on Main Street
across from the post office for years until he landed over there with Bronko on
Columbus Dr.
Subways on Columbus Dr.
At
Street Level. Used to meet sources inside Subways on Columbus Dr. for a cup of Joe.
And that corner window looking out towards Main Street is like a tv. You see
everybody & their grandma drive or walk by & that also paid dividends. Looking
for a source & here Street peeped him getting off that West Cal Bus on
Main& Columbus Dr. Flashback-Just finished ordering my coffee & took
that seat by the corner window. Across from was Jesse sitting in his designated
booth where Subways allowed him to sit a while & chill. Street was sending
texts waiting on his coffee. Minutes later the worker "Sir your coffee is ready.”
She yells out & holds up coffee. Street just got up & walked over to
get his coffee. Then this gal tells me. "This is his coffee” As she points
to Jesse who walked to get cup of coffee. Jesse just looked @ me. "My
bad" & shrugged my shoulders. But never will forget the love Subways showed towards Jesse.
P.S.
And when he got his monthly check he'd go to Subways & get something to eat.
The dichotomy was across the street @ New Wendy's coming to Columbus Dr. there
will be no dine in? TBC
P.S. Future site of Wendy's
